About Face: The Dramatic Impact of the Internet on Politics and Advocacy
The new E-Voter Institute book About Face: The Dramatic Impact of the Internet on Politics and Advocacy, Karen A.B. Jagoda (E-Voter Institute Press, 2009) has just been published. This is the second in a series of books about how the Internet is impacting the way political and advocacy campaigns are being run and how the web is changing the expectations of voters. This book with contributions from 20 industry insiders will stand the test of time. It is a mixture of optimism about the use of the Internet in campaigns with a strong element of realism about how hard it is to effectuate change in the process.
With the results of the 2009 elections today, we now see that strategies and lessons learned in 2008 may or may not work in 2010 to say nothing about 2012. Our new book includes best practices, case studies and research that can help political strategists more clearly see the Internet options for reaching and persuading voters.

Guest on the podcast today is Kassy Perry, President and CEO, Perry Communications Group talking about efforts by the California State Parks Foundation to raise awareness and inform government officials about concerns about state park closings. With little time and a small budget, this advocacy group used Facebook, YouTube, email and Twitter to organize and motivate. Efforts so far have produced 47,000 letters to the Governor’s office, over 31,000 petition signatures, and more than 1,000 pictures and videos posted from visitors to state parks showing how much they enjoyed the park. Kassy’s theory is that the more voices are heard and faces put to the issue, the tougher it is for elected officials to cut programs.

Healthcare Under the Microscope

We also discussed a report Nielsen released in April which shows that time spent on social networks surpassed time spent on email in February and the explosive growth of time spent viewing online video. Politican and advocacy clients are asking about how to use all these tools to engage voters and supporters but there is still great uncertainty about who they might influence. We say now is the time to experiment.

Other topics include trends in social net functionality and managing a presence on multiple social networks. Check out NYTimes article All You Need to Know to Tweet on Twitter which gets into some useful tips which Michael elaborates on. Trend watch: Michael reports his 3 year old son is showing signs of wanting to start his own circle and is not exactly willing to join in the establish circle at his school.
